Overview

The wide-spread of English has led to the development of new perceptions and practices of the English language around the world, known as world Englishes. Communication in English in the 21st century takes place among speakers of world Englishes. In this unit, you will explore the historical background and linguistic features of English varieties, and current practices among the speakers of Englishes around the world. You will also examine relevant issues associated with world Englishes, and the implications of understanding Englishes around the world for intercultural communication in the multilingual and transmedia world.
