Overview

In this unit, you will undertake a professional placement with a host partner organisation in the news media industry. Placement opportunities are negotiated with the Unit Coordinator. While undertaking your placement, you will produce a self-authored work of news media for publication/broadcast as defined by the host partner organisation and the Unit Coordinator, and a reflective report on the process and products of your industry placement. The host partner organisation will appoint a field supervisor for the project although the Chief Examiner remains the principal assessor for the unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. apply the principles and practice of journalism to practical experience in journalistic media in Australia;
  2. analyse and critically reflect on newsroom operations, news criteria and journalism professional practice;
  3. identify the skills relevant to prospective employers and the demands of a professional workplace, and critically evaluate your own skills development to meet these demands;
  4. curate and present a folio of experiences and publications from your placement.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
