This unit offers an in-depth exploration of the innovation economy, focusing on ventures at the intersection of science, entrepreneurship, and societal impact. Designed for aspiring leaders, operators, investors, and professionals interested in working with cutting-edge startups, the unit equips you with the tools to evaluate and support early-stage, high-potential ventures. Guided by experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts, you will examine key topics such as early-stage financing, market opportunity analysis, go-to-market and pricing strategies, and exit planning. Through immersive, hands-on experience within the Creative Destruction Lab ecosystem, you will apply theoretical frameworks to real-world scenarios by assessing venture potential and developing strategic recommendations. By the end of the unit, you will be equipped to think critically and act decisively in the high-stakes world of frontier innovation—turning insight into impact.

Learning outcomes
- understand the frontier technology landscape, including current key trends and historical economic impacts
- evaluate market opportunities (including TAM) for frontier technology
- acquire skills in strategising and executing market entry
- conduct competitor research in science-based industries focusing on positioning and differentiation
- navigate the Regulatory and Legal Landscape of science and technology ventures
- apply financial and economic analysis to real world frontier tech solutions.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
