Overview

What fuels the growth of frontier technologies addressing climate change, global health crises, and geopolitical security risks? How do science- and technology-based ventures scale, and what makes them defensible in competitive markets? In this unit, you will explore the innovation economy through the lens of high-potential, deep technology startups. You will gain insight into how cutting-edge ventures are built, financed, and introduced to the market by combining scientific discovery with entrepreneurial strategy. You will learn how to assess market opportunities, evaluate innovation viability, and develop strategic plans for early-stage ventures. Guided by experienced entrepreneurs and investors, you will apply these tools through a hands-on consulting project with real startups from the Creative Destruction Lab ecosystem. By the end of the unit, you will be prepared to think critically, communicate effectively, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of science-based ventures that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the frontier technology landscape, including current key trends and historical economic impacts
  2. evaluate market opportunities for frontier technologies using frameworks such as TAM/SAM/SOM and customer segmentation
  3. acquire skills in strategising and executing go-to-market plans for science-based ventures
  4. conduct competitor and industry analysis in deep tech sectors, with an emphasis on strategic positioning and differentiation
  5. navigate the regulatory, intellectual property, and legal considerations relevant to high-tech and science-driven startups
  6. apply financial modelling and economic analysis to assess venture viability, scalability, and investment readiness.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
