Bioinformatics aims to cover the computational analyses of genomics and other similar biologically relevant big datasets. The unit explores the application of on-line tools and computational methods to harness data in biomedical and biological sciences, particularly in genomics and proteomics.

Learning outcomes
- Describe recent advances in genomics;
- Navigate genomic and proteomic databases in a variety of species;
- Use Linux, Python and R to query big data (DNA, RNA or amino acid sequences);
- Identify conserved features in nucleotide sequences and define functional domains;
- Identify sequences and data on mutations associated with human diseases;
- Interpret structural and functional effects of mutations and predict molecular mechanisms underlying the resulting disease;
- Construct and analyse sequence alignments, molecular phylogeny and molecular models using nucleotide or amino acid sequences.
