Overview

In this unit you will be introduced the various aspects of plant biotechnology and its relationship to plant breeding. You will learn plant genomes and organisation, the regulation of gene expression, plant cell and tissue culture methodologies, gene transformation techniques, the application of transgenic technology for crop improvement and the use of transgenic plants as bioreactors for the production of novel proteins in medicine and industry.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of current issues and technologies in plant biotechnology;
  2. Explain the use of biotechnology in plant breeding;
  3. Design constructs to alter the expression of specific genes and outline the various strategies involved in the creation of existing plant transgenic crops;
  4. Discuss the potential role of genetic manipulation to produce novel plant products of potential economic importance;
  5. Analyse, interprete and present scientific data.
