Overview

The legal framework which operates in relation to marketing decisions and practice. Topics discussed include unfair trading practices, intellectual property rights (patents, trade marks, copyright and designs), anti-competitive conduct and new marketing practices. The unit places the laws controlling unfair and anti-competitive practices within the wider economic context.

  1. apply key principles of consumer, intellectual property and competition law to develop compliant marketing and advertising strategies
  2. explain the potential impact of new developments in marketing law on marketing practices
  3. communicate legal concepts clearly and effectively in a business context, adapting to diverse audiences and contexts
  4. collaborate effectively in teams to analyse and present solutions to legal challenges in marketing.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
