Overview

This unit provides an overview of water and wastewater systems in urban environments. The overview focuses on these systems' functions regarding the provision of drinking water and wastewater treatment and their modes of operation. Specific topics include water supply, water use and consumption, drinking water treatment and distribution, wastewater characterisation and secondary treatment, sludge handling, resource recovery and nature-based solutions for wastewater treatment. Treatment process theory and design are covered in this unit for both drinking water and wastewater treatment systems.

Areas of study: E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Specialisation: Civil engineering Minor: Civil engineering

Continuous assessment: 50% Final assessment: 50% This unit contains hurdle requirements that you must achieve to be able to pass the unit. You are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final assessment component. The consequence of not achieving a hurdle requirement is a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discern components of the water treatment chain and explain the chemical processes for water hardness removal.
  2. Design the various components of active and passive wastewater treatment plants.
  3. Determine potential quantities of recycled wastewater and recovered biosolids based on designs of secondary wastewater treatment plant.
  4. Discern the components of advanced secondary wastewater treatment and energy recovery processes and explain the biological processes for the anaerobic treatment of sludge.
  5. Decide between various wastewater treatment systems for differing problems given space, economic, and environmental constraints.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
