Overview

The unit explores how the construction industry is responding to the challenges in each of the four sectors in Civil Engineering - materials innovation, geotechnical technology innovations, green transport and water sensitive urban designs. Through investigating these sectors, the state-of-the-art knowledge of green building is covered.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply the knowledge of green materials and technology to the solution of complex problems involving buildings and structures.
  2. Relate the knowledge of physics and chemistry to green building concepts.
  3. Compute and assess the components of the Malaysian Green Building Index (GBI) and relate this to similar indices around the world.
  4. Conduct the necessary calculations for the assessment of sustainability measurements in green buildings.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
