Climate change presents a challenge that society must meet head-on. In this unit, you will learn to view climate change as an intersectional problem with the potential to affect every part of human life. You will begin at the start of the story: how has our climate changed in the past, and how is it changing now? You will learn how to measure changes in the climate system, how to project these changes into the future, and how to predict the impacts that those changes might have. You will learn to understand the risk that these changes and impacts present to the world. Finally, you will respond to climate change, and think about how to reduce the rate and severity of climate change. This unit and its complementary unit CLI1200 follow Working Groups I, II and III of the Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) Sixth assessment report (AR6). These elective units can be taken together, or as standalone units, and are designed to complement any major across Monash by teaching you the fundamentals of climate change, its impacts and how we can respond over a broad range of disciplines.

Learning outcomes
- Interpret climate change as an intersectional and interdisciplinary problem;
- Apply contemporary scientific knowledge to describe the climate system and how and why it is changing;
- Analyse data and risks to predict our future under a changing climate;
- Assess the different ways that we can respond to a changing climate;
- Demonstrate competence in information technology, data handling, problem solving, communication skills and team work;
- Communicate climate change information and responses to a variety of stakeholders.
Workload
12 hours per week, consisting of: • 2-hours of pre-class activities. These are a mix of pre-recorded videos, activities and readings; • 2-hours of applied class and • 8-hours of self-directed learning, which may include additional pre-class activities, revision, working on assignments, groupwork, or engaging with further self-directed activities.
