CVP5000 · Perfusion principles and practices 1: Foundations
2026 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 5Victorian Heart Institute (VHI)
Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit, you will be introduced to two foundational areas of perfusion practice: the equipment used for cardiopulmonary bypass and intraoperative blood management. You will develop a deep understanding of the history and operation of key bypass circuitry, equipment and techniques that will be encountered early in clinical training. Mastery of these components in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand College of Perfusionists’ (ANZCP) Standards and Guidelines is essential for effective clinical practice. You will also learn about blood conservation and autotransfusion, which will be foundational skills underpinning your conduct of both cardiopulmonary bypass and cell salvage in the clinical environment. Throughout the unit, you will also begin to develop the reflective practice, practical skills, and professional judgement required to support safe learning, ongoing development, and effective participation in the clinical perfusion environment. In addition, the unit will introduce the importance of culturally safe healthcare in perfusion, including how social and cultural determinants of health may influence case planning for diverse patient populations.

Assessment
The Handbook lists an examination for this unit.
| # | Assessment | Type | Weight | Hurdle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Practical submission 1 and examination: (10 min recording and 10 minute viva voce) (Pass/Fail) | Exercise | 0% | Competency |
| 2 | Perfusion portfolio 1 (approximately 2,500 words) and Discussion (10 minutes) (Pass/Fail) | Portfolio | 0% | Competency |
Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit.
Assessment details may change. Please refer to the assessment information in Moodle closer to the start of the teaching period.
Requisites
Learning outcomes
- Analyse the principles of perfusion equipment and circuitry components in cardiopulmonary bypass practice.
- Justify own knowledge and skills in accordance with the ANZCP Competency Standards, ANZCP Standards and Guidelines and NSQHS Standards, for clinical practice of cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Evaluate the development of bypass technologies since the origins of cardiopulmonary bypass to justify contemporary practice.
- Assess haematological effects of cardiopulmonary bypass and principles of intraoperative blood management and their impacts upon patient care.
- Justify the clinical application of autotransfusion and patient blood management strategies using relevant literature and guidelines, including National Blood Authority guidance.
- Identify approaches to support culturally safe practice, ensuring consideration of social and cultural determinants of health, in patient-centered perfusion practice.
- Reflect on emerging perfusion knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours to identify learning needs and strategies for ongoing improvement in clinical practice.
Workload
