Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit, you will develop an understanding of the biomedical and bioelectronic principles that underpin perfusion equipment, patient monitoring systems, and safety devices used in contemporary perfusion practice. You will examine how these principles are applied in the cardiothoracic operating theatre to support safe and effective cardiopulmonary bypass. Particular emphasis is placed on the underlying principles, monitoring, and safe use of perfusion hardware and associated clinical technologies, with reference to the ANZCP Standards and Guidelines. Throughout the unit, you will explore technical issues and equipment malfunctions that may arise in practice and develop structured troubleshooting and problem-solving approaches to manage these safely. You will also examine how monitoring systems, alarms, and safety devices contribute to risk reduction and support clinical decision-making during bypass. By the end of the unit, you will be able to apply biomedical electronics concepts to perfusion scenarios, justify the use of monitoring and safety technologies, and communicate these principles clearly in relation to safe patient care.
