Overview

This unit focuses on broad topics, including industrialisation, sectoral shifts in employment, urbanisation, education and health in developing and middle income countries. You will acquire a deeper and more structured understanding of trends in the region and also be able to better evaluate remaining differences in development between developing and middle-income nations in Asia and the rich countries that are the main focus of your economics textbooks. The unit will assist you with your preparation for employment by companies that operate in developing and middle-income nations.

Learning outcomes

  1. describe the causal revolution in methodologies and economic theories of transformation
  2. appraise how we measure and conceptualise the concept of development and well-being
  3. examine and suggest policy interventions to augment the state of human development in low income countries
  4. organise and assess the role of the economic theories comprising long run factors, and the role of market and government failures, in affecting comparative patterns of development.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
