2026 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 2Department of Economics
Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
This unit examines the resurrection of China in the global economy and its impact on international business, trade and investment, and global economic growth. It analyses China's economic development strategy since 1978 and the consequences on growth, poverty alleviation, income distribution, integration into the world economy, and the challenges of increased competitiveness on other major economies. In addition, it examines how China's participation in regional trade agreements (such as the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement) and the World Trade Organization has opened up opportunities vis-à-vis imposed challenges for trade, investment, and international cooperation. It also provides a strategic perspective on issues facing multinationals doing business in China – such as the state interference on business operations, forced technological transfer and IP protection, wide adoption of e-commerce and e-payment system, with insights into successful business models.
