Overview
This unit equips you with the mathematical and analytical tools needed for advanced study in economics. You will learn how to use optimisation, linear algebra, and dynamic methods to understand economic models in both microeconomics and macroeconomics, and how these tools underpin empirical research—particularly in microeconomics. The unit builds a foundation for postgraduate coursework and research in theory, econometrics, and applied economics.

Learning outcomes
- apply mathematical techniques, including optimisation and linear algebra, to analyse microeconomic and macroeconomic models;
- formulate and solve economic problems that link theoretical models to empirical specifications;
- interpret empirical analyses in microeconomics and macroeconomics using formal modelling frameworks;
- use analytical tools to evaluate and support empirical strategies in economics.
Workload
