Overview

Within this unit you will develop a theoretical foundation of how individuals acquire and refine a broad range of movement skills and understand how this translates into practical approaches to sports coaching. You will be introduced to concepts such as tacit knowledge and environmental constraints to understand the dynamic interaction between body and environment in the production of high-level skilled sporting and lifetime physical activity movements across a range of contexts including active play, minor games, challenge and adventure, and games and sports. In practical sessions, you will analyse a range of coaching styles and models based approaches that you can utilise in your coaching practice. You will have the opportunity to deliver a sequence of ‘game sense’ sessions. In addition, you will learn how to incorporate in a meaningful way, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First People's histories, cultures and languages into your delivery of sports and games. You will develop knowledge of how to use ICT within coaching to undertake assessment and provide feedback to participants. The unit therefore develops your skills to plan, facilitate, assess and critique a range of movement experiences.

Learning outcomes

  1. describe theories of motor control and skill acquisition and how these underpin practice
  2. articulate how the body, mind and environment interact in dynamic ways to impact movement outcomes
  3. provide a sound justification for particular approaches that might be used to develop motor control and skill acquisition outcomes in sports and movement contexts
  4. integrate ICT and performance analysis to assess skill acquisition, provide feedback and support participant’s learning
  5. use various coaching approaches to plan and deliver a sequence of sports and games activities
  6. demonstrate your capacity to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First People's histories, cultures and languages into sport and games delivery.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
