EDF3066 · Inclusive education: Teaching learners with diverse abilities

Overview

This unit develops your understanding of how you can respond to diversity in classrooms based on a range of characteristics and factors including learner’s physical, social and intellectual characteristics as well as linguistic, cultural, language, religious and socio-economic factors. You will develop knowledge and understanding of a repertoire of inclusive strategies for differentiating teaching in order to meet the specific learning needs of learners across the full range of abilities, and maximise the learning outcomes and full participation of all learners. You will develop and demonstrate understanding of legislative requirements that support participation of learners with disability.

Learning outcomes

1. critically analyse your own professional practice to identify and address beliefs, attitudes and practices that exclude and disadvantage some learners from achieving academic success and learning outcomes
2. develop understanding of a range of characteristics and factors including physical, social and intellectual characteristics, gender, language, religion, culture, race, sexual orientation, socio-economic status or disabilities that have an impact on learners' access to, participation in and learning outcomes at school
3. demonstrate personalised learning planning to support participation and engagement of all learners, including those with a disability
4. demonstrate understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of learners with diverse learning needs
5. evaluate teaching strategies that support the academic achievement and learning outcomes of all learners.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
