This unit considers how to ensure all young people, regardless of ability, cultural and linguistic and religious diversity, gender, social class or sexuality, are able to enjoy and participate fully in health and physical education. At a theoretical level, the unit will introduce you to a range of theories underpinning the development of inclusive curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. You will learn how to differentiate your teaching of health and physical education to meet the specific learning needs of learners across a full range of abilities. You will be supported to develop practical strategies to engage with parents and carers as well as to consider different approaches to managing challenging behaviour amongst diverse learners. The unit comprises of theoretical and practice based learning; during practical sessions, you will have the opportunity to differentiate your health and physical education delivery to meet the learning needs of diverse participants, with a particular focus on supporting full participation of young people with a range of intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities. The practical sessions will develop strategies to support you to deliver sport and physical activity in ways that are ethical, foster participation and are challenging for all. You will be encouraged to reflect on your practice, developing skills to become advocates for inclusive delivery in your future work.

Learning outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical concepts of inclusive teaching and how these can be applied to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in health and physical education.
- apply knowledge of teaching and learning strategies that encompass differentiated and inclusive approaches for diverse learners in health and physical education, with a focus on supporting full participation of learners with a disability
- articulate and apply strategies to engage with parents and carers to support approaches to inclusive health and physical education delivery
- demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches within health and physical education to manage challenging behaviour.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
