Overview

This unit explores a wide range of emerging technologies and pedagogical approaches that are transforming education. Drawing on both theoretical insights and practical experiences, you will examine technologies such as generative artificial intelligence, virtual and simulated reality, big data, and blended learning modalities, and how they challenge and expand the boundaries of traditional teaching methods. You will develop the skills to become a critical and informed technology user, engaging analytically with the affordances and limitations of these innovations. The focus is on fostering your ability to create cutting-edge, student-centred learning experiences. With a flexible and forward-looking approach, this subject will bring in new pedagogical uses of novel technologies, ensuring that you stay at the forefront of educational practice as new tools emerge.

Learning outcomes

1. critically analyse the potential and limitations of advanced educational technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and big data, in transforming teaching and learning practices
2. design and evaluate innovative pedagogical strategies that effectively integrate these pioneering technologies to enhance student-centred learning experiences
3. examine and discuss the ethical implications of using educational technologies across diverse teaching contexts, considering issues such as data privacy, equity, and digital access
4. strategically integrate emerging technologies into existing pedagogical plans, anticipating and addressing potential challenges and barriers in education.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
