Overview

This unit prepares you to teach senior secondary physical education and builds upon previously studied health and physical education specific curriculum and discipline knowledge and skills. The unit examines national and international physical education policies, the needs and interests of young people, critical movement pedagogies and assessment, and relevant research with the aim of thinking critically about learning and teaching in VCE physical education. The unit begins by exploring physical education theory, pedagogy and practice at VCE level insisting that you remain reflexive of your views, experiences and practices as well as the learning needs of diverse senior school learners. The unit provides you with essential skills and knowledge to critically engage with some of the historical, political, pedagogical and contemporary debates and issues in physical education. Working collaboratively and independently, you will review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise your knowledge and skills as you work towards advancing your capacities in this field. In the process you will further develop content knowledge at VCE level in physical education, thus preparing you for the senior school physical education context.
