Overview

This unit addresses the planning of curriculum pertinent to Australian classrooms, with a particular focus on contemporary art and design in Australia. As a preservice teacher, you will develop the capacity to embed Indigenous knowledge of visual arts and design in your curriculum. You will be given an opportunity to research contemporary Indigenous artists and designers to increase your awareness of current practice in the Australian artworld, relevant to the Australian secondary school curriculum.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the links between contemporary art and design in Australia and the art and design curriculum
  2. explore ways to embed Indigenous knowledges of art and design in your curriculum
  3. demonstrate skills and subject knowledge appropriate for teaching visual art and design subjects 7-12
  4. devise relevant summative and formative assessment tasks and/or activities for teaching and learning in visual art and design domains 7-12
  5. reflect on both the prescribed and interpreted curriculum/s in order to support the varying capacities of a diverse student body towards successful learning experiences.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
