This units offers an introduction to individuals and couples therapy and the counselling issues that typically affect individuals and couples of multi ethnic groups. You will be introduced to key concepts of professional helpers from the Egan Model such as counselling micro-skills and stages of counselling, and their application to clinical practice. You will be introduced to the theory and aspects of SOLER set-up, counselling couples’ techniques so as to become familiar with the role of the therapist. You will also have the opportunity to reflect on your own attributes and personal development in relation to being an effective counsellor, especially with regard to working with culturally diverse families in Malaysia.

Learning outcomes
- differentiate and critically evaluate approaches to counselling individuals and couples
- understand the role of being an individual and couples therapist
- build sensitivity to other people's cultural and personal ways and preferences in family life
- explain your own values and style and their influence on counselling practice, and critically appraise your performance as a family counsellor
- apply counselling skills and produce treatment plans and practice notes.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload equals 144 hours per semester comprising: (a.) Contact hours for on-campus students: • equivalent to 36 hours of engagement in online, face-to-face or blended platforms (b) Additional requirements (all students): • independent study to make up the required minimum hours during the semester.
