Overview

This unit will provide you with a theoretical overview of psychological assessment and measurement using evidence-based approaches. The different approaches to the design and construction of assessment tools will be addressed. Test evaluation methods and a review of recent trends in test development theory will also be addressed. The unit will support you to administer, score and interpret a range of tests and classification tools. The implications of such an approach for evidence-based counselling and psychological interventions will be discussed.

Learning outcomes

  1. demonstrate an understanding of appropriate assessment procedures necessary to identify symptomatology prevalent in clients
  2. conduct clinical intake interviews, as well as mental status exams
  3. summarise findings of assessments from professional reports
  4. demonstrate an ability to make appropriate recommendations for possible assessments
  5. effectively translate assessment findings to interventions.

Workload

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include: • on average 28 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning, online engagement and practical activities; and • self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours For the unit teaching schedule, please visit the timetable.
