This unit focuses on the selection, application, and evaluation of psychological, social, behavioural, and educational interventions for systems (including and organisations such as schools) and groups. Prevention and systems frameworks, and therapeutic interventions for working with groups will be identified, selected and critically appraised. You will learn to distinguish between different frameworks and interventions for families, schools and groups, apply micro-counselling skills and evaluate issues related to group-based intervention and support, evaluate and synthesise frameworks and programs for group interventions, and critically reflect on professional practice and evaluate group intervention outcomes. This unit supports the translation of theory into practice and provides opportunities for you to work collaboratively with peers and develop applied skills through professional experience.

Learning outcomes
- identify and critique a range of group-based frameworks and programs for families, schools, and diverse cultural groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- integrate and synthesize research and theoretical perspectives for selecting and planning effective and appropriate interventions for working with groups
- be familiar with the process of facilitating a group program in a school, private practice, or community clinic setting
- engage in critical evaluation of professional and interprofessional practice and program outcomes when working across individuals and groups
- identify and manage ethical and professional issues related to working with multiple clients (e.g. groups and/or families) and other professional groups and agencies.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: A. Semester delivery • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study B. Term delivery • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
