Overview

This is part 1 of a two unit sequence of research study in the field of educational and developmental psychology. Based on the scientist-practitioner model, the practice of psychology is evidence-based. It requires competence in the critical analysis of research literature and knowledge of appropriate research methodologies. This unit focuses on the knowledge and skills associated with research methodologies relevant to the study and practice of educational and developmental psychology and culminates in the development of a research plan. The research is conducted under the guidance of an academic supervisor and must be relevant to the area of educational and developmental psychology. In this unit you will critically review the research literature related to your topic, formulate research questions, design the methodology, and consider the importance of all ethical issues. The research project will be submitted in Research in educational and developmental psychology thesis part 2.

This unit is graded pass grade only (PGO). Note: A 6000 to 8000-word research project will be submitted in EDF5725 Research in educational and developmental psychology thesis part 2. The format of the research project must comply with the options as set out in the APAC Accreditation Standards research requirements for postgraduate coursework degrees at the time of commencing in the research.

Learning outcomes

  1. demonstrate knowledge of appropriate research methodologies for the study of educational and development psychology including those used for the evaluation of psychological practice
  2. identify a research topic relevant to educational and developmental psychology that is feasible to investigate within the two-unit time frame
  3. identify key research questions
  4. select and review relevant theory and literature
  5. design an appropriate study methodology to investigate the research questions
  6. identify an appropriate method of data analysis
  7. consider ethical issues involved in research
  8. critically appraise research in educational and developmental psychology
  9. prepare a comprehensive written research plan
