Overview

The thesis unit in the Master of Applied Behaviour Analysis (MABA) at Monash University is designed to foster research competence, critical analysis, and evidence-based inquiry in behaviour analysis. Students will carry out their research under the supervision of a doctoral-level core faculty member, following approved methodologies. Students will complete a thesis of no less than 10,000 words. Ethical approval from the Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee (MUHREC) is required for any study involving human participants. Students must complete a mandatory ethics webinar and quiz before proceeding.

Learning outcomes

  1. independently conduct an empirical or theoretical research project such as a systematic literature review, experimental study, or applied research project
  2. apply advanced behavioural research methods and data analyses to evaluate intervention outcomes or theoretical constructs
  3. critically integrate and synthesise literature to position the research within a broader scientific and theoretical context
  4. adhere to ethical, legal, and professional standards governing human research to communicate research outcomes in a format suitable for peer-reviewed publication and professional dissemination
  5. evaluate the practical implications of research findings and their application within behavioural science or professional settings
  6. critique the strengths and limitations of the completed research, and develop recommendations for future research to address gaps in the research.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 18 hours over the course of the semester consisting of 12 2-hour group supervision sessions delivered fortnightly, and • 6 hours of individual supervision. The group supervision will be led by the unit coordinator and the individual supervision will be delivered by the sessional teaching associate. • The remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study for you to complete you individualised research project.
