Overview

This unit offers an introduction to education as a profession, and supports you with foundational knowledge, skills and understandings as you embark on teaching as a profession. You will build your professional skills, knowledge and understandings of teaching through a process of personal inquiry, exploration of exemplary practices and compliance with requirements through a range of structures, educative frameworks and models that support, inform or regulate practice. As a result of this work, you will develop a deeper understanding of the connection between professional codes of conduct, school policies, your classroom practices and student learning. Your ongoing professional learning needs will be explored through examination of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Learning outcomes

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning
  2. demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement
  3. be able to access and explore the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and their place in identifying professional learning needs
  4. understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession
  5. understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
