Overview

This unit introduces you to mathematical techniques that are widely used in the disciplines of economics, econometrics, finance and actuarial science. Topics covered include matrix algebra, sets, sequences and functions, multivariate calculus, elementary real analysis and stochastic processes.

Learning outcomes

  1. perform a variety of algebraic operations using vectors and matrices
  2. derive the eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors of a square matrix
  3. understand a variety of set-theoretic concepts, such as open and closed sets
  4. derive from first principles the limit of a sequence of real numbers
  5. differentiate and integrate functions of several variables
  6. understand the properties of stochastic processes and how to conduct statistical analysis

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
