Overview

This unit presents formulation and analysis of econometric models and techniques that are widely used in modern applied econometrics. Emphasis is placed on models that address special problems that arise when analysing microeconomic data, that is, data at the level of individual consumers, households and firms. The topics covered include modelling discrete dependent variables, simultaneous equations models, panel data estimation, conducting inference in models in which the dependent variable is jointly determined with one or more regressors. The models taught in this unit are widely used in practical applications in economics and business.

Learning outcomes

  1. estimate and evaluate statistical models for different types of limited dependent and endogenous explanatory variables
  2. perform statistical inference in a system of simultaneous equations
  3. demonstrate the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively to diverse audiences
  4. apply appropriate econometrics panel data analysis using global economic data.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
