Overview

This unit introduces you to the many concepts, tools and techniques for managing information technology projects. Exploring traditional and agile approaches for managing projects, topics include project lifecycles, project planning, project scheduling, team building, risk management, time and quality management. A case study approach will be used to provide learning opportunities, with an emphasis on the unique aspects of information technology projects.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply the 10 Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) areas to modern IT projects; Sem 2, 2026: Analyse and evaluate predictive and adaptive project management methodologies, such as PMBOK, Agile and Scrum, and apply appropriate approaches to manage IT projects;
  2. Create IT project governance and compliance frameworks needed to manage modern IT projects; Sem 2, 2026: Develop and evaluate key project artefacts, such as project charters, scope statements, backlogs, schedules and other planning documents, for real-world IT project scenarios;
  3. Recommend project management and critical thinking strategies and techniques for modern IT projects; Sem 2, 2026: Analyse project risks, stakeholder needs, constraints and project governance considerations to support informed decision-making;
  4. Create a collaborative ICT project plan using the PMBOK areas for a given case study; Sem 2, 2026: Demonstrate effective teamwork, communication and stakeholder engagement in project environments;
  5. Apply collaborative strategies to support effective teamwork in modern IT projects. Sem 2, 2026: Critically evaluate the use of emerging tools, such as AI, in project management contexts.

Workload

This unit has a requirement of 1-2 hours per week of asynchronous learning. Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities.
