FIT3190 · Work integrated learning: Industry placement

Overview

FIT3190 is a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit that allows eligible students to receive academic credit for a self-sourced industry internship over the summer and winter teaching periods. The unit is designed to integrate professional workplace experience with academic reflection, industry evaluation, and structured learning outcomes. You complete a paid internship placement totalling 230 hours, normally undertaken over 6 consecutive weeks full-time. Placements must be approved by the Faculty prior to commencement and must meet program requirements relating to supervision, relevance to IT, and workplace conditions. Throughout the placement, you are supported through academic check-ins and assessment activities including professional reflections, workplace evaluations, and a final presentation. FIT3190 provides you with the opportunity to develop industry experience, professional skills, and workplace readiness while progressing through your degree.

Learning outcomes

1. Set achievable and measurable goals;
2. Identify useful theoretical knowledge that has been covered in prior coursework and knowledge that has not yet been covered;
3. Develop and practice professional skills and attitudes including: initiative, communication, time-management and teamwork skills in a business environment;
4. Develop solutions to relevant problems in a business context using information technology and other techniques;
5. Prepare documentation and written reports of a professional standard;
6. Address performance improvement opportunities identified by industry supervisors and self-assess opportunities for personal development.

Workload

Students on placement are deployed full-time (36 hours per week) for 6 weeks with an approved industry partner of the work professional placement program in a role within the company.
