2027 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 4Faculty of Information Technology
Overview
This unit provides an introduction to computational science through the design, analysis, and interpretation of models and simulations. It examines contrasting modelling approaches, including continuous and discrete, analytical and numerical, deterministic and stochastic, and static and dynamic models, and shows how these are used to study complex systems across a range of scientific domains. You will learn how to build, verify, visualise, and interpret computational models, and how to assess the implications of choosing one modelling approach over another. Through applied work with scientific computing tools, the unit develops the ability to use computation not only to implement solutions, but to investigate and understand systems that are difficult to analyse directly.

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- Communicate modelling assumptions, results and uncertainties clearly to technical and interdisciplinary audiences using written, code-based and visual forms;
- Collaborate effectively with peers and domain stakeholders across the modelling lifecycle, taking responsibility for shared outcomes and adjusting your contribution as needs shift;
- Construct, verify, visualise and interpret computational models across continuous, discrete, deterministic and stochastic settings, justifying the choice of modelling approach for the problem at hand.
