2027 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 4Faculty of Information Technology
Overview
This honours practice unit is the advanced continuation of company-based research engagement within the Monash IT Industry Practice Program. You will extend, refine and complete a substantial research-informed contribution within your student-led company, demonstrating the level of independence, critical judgement, methodological awareness and evidence-based reasoning expected in an AQF 8 honours pathway. You will conduct applied or professionally oriented research that is embedded in authentic company work. This may involve evaluating a technical approach, studying a system or process, designing and testing an intervention, comparing methods, analysing data, investigating user or stakeholder needs, examining responsible technology implications, or producing evidence that informs future company direction. At this stage, you are expected to move beyond participation in research activity toward stronger research ownership. You will justify your research approach, engage critically with relevant evidence, evaluate the limitations of your methods and findings, and communicate the significance of your contribution to both the company and the broader discipline or professional context. You will also help position the company to continue benefiting from your work. This may include producing research documentation, technical artefacts, evaluation reports, datasets, decision records, prototypes, recommendations, handover material, or future research and development pathways. Your final portfolio should demonstrate your research engagement, advanced professional capability, individual contribution, reflective development and readiness for industry, research employment or further study.
