Overview
This unit introduces functional programming as a disciplined way to construct software through functions, immutable data, compositional design, and type-guided reasoning. It covers higher-order functions, recursion over structured data, closures, algebraic data types, evaluation strategies, and the relationship between functional programming and formal reasoning about program behaviour. You will learn how to solve problems without relying on mutable state, compare functional techniques with imperative and object-oriented approaches, and use types and abstractions to make programs clearer, safer, and easier to test. Through practical work in a modern functional language, the unit strengthens your programming skills and prepares you for advanced work in semantics, compilers, and verification.

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- Identify gaps in your functional-programming knowledge and pursue learning strategies- including documentation, peer exchange and AI-enabled tutors - that build independent capability in a paradigm new to most students;
- Design, code, test and document programs in a modern functional language using higher-order functions, recursion, algebraic data types and type-guided reasoning, applying agreed standards;
- Design and document compositional software architectures that exploit immutability, types and pure functions to produce solutions that are clearer, safer and easier to test.
