Overview

This unit focuses on a holistic approach to project management. It provides you with a high level of understanding of the processes of project management, as well as sound skills in the use of project tools. Proficiency in using key tools and concepts could give you a significant competitive advantage in the market place. The content deals with: concepts and definitions; organising and staffing the project office and team; planning, scheduling techniques; cost control; risk management; contracts and procurement; etc. Case studies, articles of interest that may appear in current media, and your own work experiences with project management, will be discussed to optimise the learning opportunity in the unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply the 10 Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) areas to modern IT projects;
  2. Create IT project governance & compliance frameworks, including ethics and security requirements, to manage modern IT projects;
  3. Recommend project management and critical thinking strategies and techniques for modern IT projects;
  4. Create a collaborative ICT project plan using the PMBOK areas for a given case-study;
  5. Collaborative strategies to support effective teamwork in modern IT projects.

Workload

This unit has a requirement of 1-2 hours per week of asynchronous learning. Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities. Although this unit is offered in flexible mode, some assessment activities, including demonstrations, pitches and interviews, quizzes are conducted during scheduled Applied sessions. Students should ensure they regularly check unit communications and attend relevant sessions to meet assessment requirements.
