Overview

The aim of this unit is to prepare you to conduct research and innovation in the IT industry. It provides broad coverage of the issues, concepts, methods, and techniques associated with the contemporary IT professional as you conduct research, and design and evaluate new products and services. It introduces you to major research and innovation paradigms, the principles of research and innovation design, responsible research and innovation, and research and innovation methods and techniques within IT industry. It also covers how to effectively communicate the results research and innovation through the established method of short-form video. Skills developed and knowledge acquired from this unit will prepare you to plan, conduct and communicate research and innovation within an IT organisation, as well as to be knowledgeable and critical interpreters of research and innovation more generally.

You will demonstrate your understanding of key methods and skills through individual activities linked to each week’s active learning studio This may include reviews of research literature; qualitative and quantitative method research designs, applying analysis techniques; and communicating research.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the ability to frame and design all aspects of the research and innovation pipeline;
  2. Review and critique the current state of art from a wide range of sources to inform a research question and appropriate methods;
  3. Explain the ethical and professional issues that may arise when conducting IT research and innovation and demonstrate practical ways to address them;
  4. Evaluate, select and justify research and innovation methods, including data collection and analysis using qualitative and quantitative methods;
  5. Identify and describe intellectual property issues related to IT research and innovation, including prior art and new knowledge;
  6. Communicate the outcomes of research and innovation activities, demonstrating an understanding of diverse audiences and stakeholders.

Workload

In addition to the scheduled activities, you will be required to undertake 2 hours of preparation before each studio class and a minimum of 6 hours of independent study completing post-studio activities and assessments per week. Note: studios are On-Campus. Lectures are online.
