Overview
This unit introduces quantum computing from a computer science perspective, focusing on quantum models of computation, algorithmic reasoning, simulation, programming, and the design of quantum and hybrid classical–quantum solutions. You will examine how quantum computation differs from classical computation, how quantum information is represented and manipulated, and how quantum circuits and algorithms can be used to address selected computational problems. You will develop practical experience using contemporary quantum programming frameworks, simulators and development tools to implement, test and analyse quantum circuits and algorithms. The unit will emphasise the relationship between mathematical models, computational artefacts and observed outputs, including how quantum behaviour can be modelled, simulated, interpreted and evaluated. Through problem-based and programming activities, you will compare classical and quantum approaches, design quantum algorithmic workflows, evaluate the suitability and limitations of quantum techniques, and document your design and implementation decisions. The unit prepares you to reason about quantum computing as an emerging computational paradigm while applying rigorous computer science practices to modelling, programming and software design.
