Overview

This unit engages with the close visual analysis of selected feature films. While embracing theoretical concerns, the primary emphasis is on the artistic and visual context of film. Through the viewing and analysis of films, a range of themes, theories, practices and historical contexts will be explored. You will be set creative practice-based tasks that culminate in the production of a short film project.

Requisites

Learning outcomes

1. Identify and apply fundamental production techniques and skills to develop and create a short film project;
2. Develop an awareness of cinematic language and foundational screen concepts to inform the development of creative film projects;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of narrative devices and storytelling approaches within film and moving image;
4. Demonstrate an informed understanding of film histories and art cinema traditions through critical engagement with relevant cultural and theoretical frameworks.

Workload

12 hours per week including 4 contact hours plus 8 hours of independent study.
