Overview

In this unit, you will be introduced to typical biochemical processes, including feedstock supply, reaction, separation and utilities of food bio-processes. Treatment and storage of the feedstock/product will also be examined. The unit will also focus on the operation and choice of typical equipment and processes. Safety issues and financial impact of food processes will be highlighted.

Learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate knowledge of typical symbols and terminology used in food processing industries;
2. Describe upstream and downstream processes and equipment;
3. Describe typical bioreactor steps employed in a bioprocess operation;
4. Demonstrate understanding of simple equipment design;
5. Demonstrate understanding of the effect of financial and safety aspects on process design;
6. Demonstrate communication and report writing skills;
7. Exhibit teamwork skills.

Workload

• Two hours of lecture recordings; • One hour tutorial and • Eight hours of independent study per week. • Three hours of practical classes for three weeks plus • One 3-hour field trip.
