Overview

The ability to reproduce is critical for the continuation of species. In this unit, you will develop a deep understanding of the complex processes that govern reproductive function across different animal species throughout their lifespan. We begin by identifying and examining the anatomical structures of the reproductive system, as well as the chemical components that play essential roles in its functioning. You will learn how gametes are made and the mechanisms underlying gametogenesis, elucidating the significance of the cell cycle and apoptosis in this process. You will explore sex determination in various animals, examining the genetic and hormonal pathways that determine the commitment of embryonic stem cells to the male or female germ cell lineage, and how these are involved in the differentiation and development of the male and female reproductive tracts across different animal species. Building on these gene and hormone interactions you will explore different disorders of sexual development, identifying their symptoms and elucidating their biological origins. Upon completing this unit, you will have developed the foundational knowledge needed to explore the spectrum of topics encompassed within the reproductive sciences.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the anatomical and chemical components of the reproductive system
  2. Describe how hormones produced by the pituitary, hypothalamus and gonads contribute to reproductive function across the lifespan of different animals
  3. Explain how the processes of the cell cycle and apoptosis contribute to the production of functional gametes
  4. Define the concepts underpinning sex determination in different animals
  5. Distinguish between the genetic and hormonal pathways that result in an embryonic stem cell committing to the male or female germ cell lineage
  6. Compare the genetic and hormonal pathways that result in the differentiation and development of the male and female tract in different animals
  7. Apply knowledge of reproductive function to formulate evidence-based theories, opinions and diagnoses
  8. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences and in a variety of formats
  9. Appraise the work of yourself and others (including peers, professionals and artificial intelligence), and apply feedback to improve individual and team performance in reproductive science

Workload

6 hours of teacher directed study per week, including 3 hours of lectures and 3 hours of tutorials. 18 hours per week of self-directed study dedicated to the review of course content and completion of assessments. Total per week = 24 hours
