Overview

This unit equips you to be able to conduct microsimulation and agent-based modelling for policy analysis. It describes methods and demonstrates their application for evaluation of the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and budget impact of health, education, welfare and transport policies. It emphasises construction and critique of models, in the computer lab, as an essential complement to lectures.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the purpose and features of static, dynamic, behavioural and spatial models
  2. critique models used to characterise and predict behaviour and outcomes in health, education, welfare or transport sectors
  3. construct simple models to characterise and predict behaviour and outcomes in health, education, welfare or transport sectors
  4. use microsimulation and agent-based models to predict the effects of health, education, welfare or transport policies

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
