This unit introduces you to the economic forces that shape the health system. It takes a data-driven approach to understanding the motivation of economic actors and characterising their behaviour under different incentives, market structures and system designs. It will equip you with an analytical framework for strategic decision making in healthcare markets.

Learning outcomes
- understand organisation and delivery of health services from an economic perspective
- understand the motivation and behaviour of actors in the health system
- analyse and critically appraise economic issues in design of health care systems
- analyse the effect of incentives and regulation on investment and the supply of health care services and products
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
