HSC3100 · Health evidence into practice 1

Overview

This unit is the first of two units designed to consolidate and build upon your developing knowledge and understanding of public health and health sciences practice. You will learn how to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based health interventions. From identifying public health issues and assessing the state of current evidence, to planning effective programs, measuring health impacts, and disseminating the results. The unit aims to equip you to meet the core competencies required for public health and health sciences professionals, including communication skills, teamwork, and ethical practice. It will also provide opportunity to participate in and perform authentic tasks and practices related to professional practice within the Public Health and the broader health sciences sector.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify ‘knowledge to action’ gaps and industry-standard methods to access, analyse and evaluate health knowledge synthesis products
2. Design strategies for assessing barriers and enablers to translating health sciences and public health research into practice
3. Analyse and outline challenges related to health in public and professional contexts
4. Implement a teamwork approach to evaluating a contemporary health problem and devising a solution
5. Apply the core principles of ethical public health and human research practice

Workload

6 hours of directed study per week, including 2 hours of tutorial and 4 hours of online student learning activities, plus 6 hours private study per week. Total equals 12 hours per week
