Overview

This unit provides the basic understanding of the concept of health. Varied definitions and models of health will be introduced. Differences between the health of the individual and the broader population will be examined. Determinants of health will also be explored including the roles of government policies and climate change. Current health inequalities in both Australia and globally will be identified and the underlying causes explored. The Sustainable Development Goals will be introduced. You will learn about health promotion and the Ottawa charter. You will also learn about the history and culture of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and how to provide culturally safe health care for them.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically evaluate your own values and assumptions regarding health and well-being and apply basic ethical principles to health situations.
  2. Describe the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in improving health outcomes.
  3. Compare and contrast various health models and outline basic health promotion principles.
  4. Identify the various determinants of health and describe how these affect health care provision and create inequalities in health.
  5. Discuss key global health issues, including climate change and their impact on health.
  6. Discuss the history, diversity and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (including the impact of colonisation on their health) and apply appropriate communication techniques with clients from this background.
