Overview

Network security is an important part of any computer network and essential knowledge for IT professionals. This unit provides fundamental network security for IT students and professionals. It covers wired and wireless communication and network security, security at different layers, computer system security, network services and applications security, basic defence systems, cryptography for network security, techniques for identifying system vulnerabilities and penetration testing.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically assess networked environments for security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks, and recommend improvements.
  2. Describe and critique common security standards and protocols for networked applications.
  3. Compare, select and apply cryptographic techniques for network security.
  4. Identify security issues and network attacks relating to wired and wireless networks and take action to mitigate or neutralise potential issues and attacks.
  5. Design secure networked systems against intruders and malicious networked applications whilst adhering to ethical principles.
