This unit considers global issues in human rights and public law, and will focus on topical issues in human rights law. The unit will consider and critique the development and enforcement of human rights standards in international law, and how international human rights obligations affect domestic public law broadly understood. It will consider the efficacy of and need for reform of the international human rights mechanisms. The unit will consider a selection of specific contemporary issues in human rights law, including the right to a healthy environment, the rights of indigenous peoples, the rights to freedom of expression and protest, and solidarity rights.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of the selected key global issues in human rights and public law;
- Analyse and evaluate selected key global issues in human rights and public law from a range of practice, policy and theoretical perspectives;
- Conduct research, evaluate and synthesise complex information in order to reflect on and respond to complex issues relating to selected key global issues in human rights and public law; and
- Communicate effectively, appropriately and persuasively in various forms.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
