Overview

This unit considers global issues in human rights and public law, and will focus on topical issues in human rights law. The unit will consider and critique the development and enforcement of human rights standards in international law, and how international human rights obligations affect domestic public law broadly understood. It will consider the efficacy of and need for reform of the international human rights mechanisms. The unit will consider a selection of specific contemporary issues in human rights law, including the right to a healthy environment, the rights of indigenous peoples, the rights to freedom of expression and protest, and solidarity rights.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply advanced knowledge and demonstrated understanding of key global issues in human rights and public law;
  2. Critically analyse and persuasively evaluate key global issues in human rights and public law contextualised within a broad range of practice, policy and theoretical perspectives;
  3. Develop and research a detailed investigation, analysis, and comprehensive evaluation in order to reflect on and respond to complex issues relating to key global issues in human rights and public law; and
  4. Demonstrate engaging, detailed, and persuasive communication in various forms.

Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning, and online engagement.
