Overview
This unit examines economic abuse as a form of family and domestic violence, exploring how legal systems recognise, regulate and respond to conduct that restricts a person’s financial autonomy and economic security. You will critically evaluate the effectiveness of existing legal frameworks and consider opportunities for law reform. The unit takes an international and interdisciplinary approach, drawing on comparative perspectives and areas of law including family law, property law, contract and criminal law. Particular attention is given to the ways economic abuse can intersect with other forms of abuse and to the practical barriers victims and survivors face when seeking legal remedies.
