Overview

This unit will introduce you to the fundamentals of haematology and transfusion science. We will cover the extensive range of blood cell disorders including nutritional deficiency anaemia, thalassemia, haematological malignancy and bleeding disorders. You will be exposed to adequate knowledge in blood transfusion and phlebotomy technique

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the functions of blood cells, tissue response to injury and its relationship to haematology disease;
  2. Discuss the biochemical, physiological and immunological processes involved in normal body functions and disturbances that may occur in different diseased states of with respect to blood diseases, examples, anaemias, leukaemia and some bleeding disorders;
  3. Demonstrate the adequate knowledge on blood transfusion, techniques in phlebotomy, blood grouping and component;
  4. Interpret and critically analyse laboratory results in order to distinguish between normal and pathological blood specimens.

Workload

• Three 1-hour pre-recorded lectures; • One 3-hour practical class for 5 weeks; • One 1-hour tutorial for 11 weeks and • 6 to 7 hours of independent study per week
