In this unit, you will master the fundamental and advanced principles underlying successful human embryo culture. You will critically examine the complex interactions between embryo development and in vitro environments, analysing how culture conditions support preimplantation embryo development. You will synthesise knowledge of optimal laboratory conditions, critically assessing how factors such as temperature, pH, gas composition and air quality impact embryo developmental potential and contribute to embryo stress. Considering key laboratory applications, you will evaluate the composition and function of culture media, including the biochemical and physiological principles that govern embryo-media interaction. Your learning will extend to a thorough understanding of essential equipment (incubators, laminar flow hoods, microscopes and micromanipulation systems) and the theory of aseptic cell culture techniques required to successfully practice as a clinical embryologist. Semen analysis and human embryo grading and selection methods will be explored, as you apply these skills to clinical cases. The assessments will permit demonstration of theoretical understanding, decision making in clinical scenarios and develop your skills to effectively communicate advanced scientific concepts to diverse audiences.

- Evaluate semen parameters and embryonic development using evidence-based assessment criteria for analysis, grading and selection
- Critically evaluate historical, current and emerging embryology methodologies for their application and limitations in a laboratory setting.
- Effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences (e.g. academic, patient and industry professionals).
Workload
Expect 12 hours per week of directed and self-directed learning over a six week block. For on-campus students, this unit is conducted over six weeks in Semester 1. It is expected that students attend all lectures and tutorials associated with this unit. For off-campus students, all teaching activities are recorded. Semester 1 assessments align with on-campus timeframes. If completing the unit in Semester 2, timeframes are flexible.
